Welcome to the Networks Research Laboratory (NetRL).
NetRL is part of the Computer Science Department of the University of Cyprus (UCY). It was established in the year 2002 in an effort to promote and coordinate research activities in all areas of Networks Research, including wireline and wireless, mobile and ad-hoc, MANETS and VANETS, and sensor networks.
The Founder and Director of NetRL is Dr Andreas Pitsillides, Professor, Department of Computer Science, UCY, and the Co-Director is Dr Vasos Vasiliou, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, UCY.

POSTDOC POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Applications are invited for two full-time research positions
(Postdoctoral Special Scientist) in the Networks Research Laboratory
(NetRL, www.NetRL.cs.ucy.ac.cy) and the Research Laboratory for
Foundations of Computing Systems and Theoretical Computer Science (FCS
Laboratory, http://fcslab.cs.ucy.ac.cy/) of the Department of Computer
Science at the University of Cyprus (UCY). The successful applicants
will join the FET EU H2020 project VISORSURF (http://www.visorsurf.eu/),
starting in January 2017. The project will undertake the ambitious goal
of providing programming concepts and algorithms in crafting the
electromagnetic/light behavior of materials (Metamaterials). VISORSURF
aims to develop a
hardware platform -the HyperSurface- that can host metasurface
functionalities described in software, enabled via a network of
nanonodes (Nanonetwork) embeded in the HyperSurface, adding the
potential for hosting
multiple functionalities concurrently and adaptively.
The two positions qualifications are as outlined below:
Position 1: The applicants should have general knowledge in Computer
Networks, and proven research work in as many of the following areas:
Routing and dissemination protocols, Nanonetworks, Nature-Inspired
Techniques applied in Communication Networks, and Simulation and
Evaluation of Communication (Nano)Networks.
Position 2: The applicants should have general knowledge of formal
methods and expertise in model checking as well as a good knowledge of
programming languages, and distributed computing/systems. Candidates
should demonstrate strong programming and formal modelling skills and
the expertise and commitment to apply rigorous semantics to real
systems. Familiarity with nanonetworks will be helpful but is not
necessary for the position.
The position is on a contract basis of one year, subject to renewal,
with a maximum duration extending to the end of the project. The monthly
employment cost is equal to € 2000-3500 depending on qualifications.
Employee and employer contributions will be deducted from the above
amount. The positions do not include a 13th Salary bonus or medical
insurance coverage.

In May 2014
Andreas was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of
Johannesburg, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Science, South Africa.

On 5th March 2015 Andreas delivered the Keynote speech 2015: ‘Internet

MarsSense in Top4 Student Research Papers at SpaceOps 2014 JPL, NASA
On the 20/6/2014 a press conference was held by the Minister of
Communication and Works, for the success of the MARS sense team (in
which our lab member Charalambos Sergiou is a member) to be selected
among the 4 best student paper (among 333 papers) in the SpaceOPS 2014
conference. The press conference was covered by RIK, ANT1 and SIGMA TV stations.

Congradualtion to Eliana (Iouliani) Stavrou for succesfully defending her Ph.D. thesis entitled

Andreas Kamilaris (Postdoctoral Researcher of the NETRL, University of Cyprus)
and Sotiris Themistokleous (Assistant Director of CARDET) delivered a workshop on "Sustainable Energy Awareness and Learning
Practices", at the Joint European Summer School for Doctoral Candidates
on Technology Enhanced Learning 2013, (JTEL 2013), Limassol, Cyprus.
The workshop focused on methodologies and initiatives for promoting
energy awareness, along with the demonstration of study cases from
CARDET's experiences in the field of sustainable development, and
online social networking applications and tools for energy awareness,
deriving from the work of the NETRL.The presentation of the workshop is available here.

Social Electricty is launched (available here ) and in the news (TV: in ANT1 , RIK , and in Print: Cities Today , Issue 8, Dec 2012 (article), Phileleftheros, and Interview at ITU). The ITU award ceremony was held in Paris on the 19th September. A link to the ceremony can be found here and in the ANT1 news .
Another success of the NetRL and Andreas Kamilaris: First prize in the 2nd Green ICT Application Challenge, organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). And a year later (July 2013) an article by Andreas Kmialris in the ITU blog .

'The application “SocialElectricity” has been awarded the winner of the second ITU Green ICT Application Challenge. Designed by
Andreas Kamilaris, from Cyprus, “SocialElectricity”
is a Facebook application that allows people to compare their
electricity footprint with their friends and also their
neighborhood/village/town in a country-wide scale. The application aims
to help people become aware of their electricity consumption and manage
it more rationally.
As PhD student, Andreas Kamilaris works at the Networks
Research Laboratory, which is part of the Computer Science Department of
the University of Cyprus, under the supervision of Prof. Andreas
Pitsillides.
The winner of the competition – Andreas Kamilaris – will present his application on 19 September 2012.' Link to announcement

Congradulations to
Andreas Xeros Information Dissemination in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, thesis was defended in November 2012.
Andreas Kamilaris Enabling Smart Homes using Web Technologies, thesis was defended in December 2012.

The
project "Social Networking of the Smart Home", performed by Andreas
Kamilaris and Prof. Andreas Pitsillides as part of their activities on the Web of Things, has recently received the
attention of the Web community.
Numerous blogging sites and newspapers have mentioned this work including Plogg International , Product Sourcing, Benzinga, EarthTechling, and newspaper article (in greek). Recently a best paper was awarded during the ENERGY 2011 conference.
Through this work, household appliances and sensors penetrate deeply into social networking infrastructures, fully
leveraging their software mechanisms in order to enable a vision of a smart home with a social shape.
