HSAdapt: Real-time Control of the Wireless Behavior of Environments with HyperSurfaces
Funded by: Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus, COMPLEMENTARY/0916/0008
Duration 24 Months, (PI) (2018-2020), Total Budget €98,112.50
Start Date: 1 April 2018
Description:
Metamaterials (MMs) and Metasurfaces (MSs) are a new class of materials with engineered properties, even if these go against nature. Once designed and manufactured, commonly by specialised researchers in the field, they are generally `rigid` and optimised only for the set of the given application requirements and environmental conditions designed for. If any of these conditions change then their performance is altered. VISORSURF - A Hardware Platform for Software-driven Functional Metasurfaces project will provide programmatic MSs to implement customised behaviour, on demand, using a set of MS tiles, called HyperSurfaces (HSs). The optimisation of the behaviour will be dealt within VISORSURF mostly by using off-line techniques (e.g. Genetic Algorithms). This will only guarantee their behaviour as long as the environmental conditions designed for (e.g. angle of arrival of the e-m wave) remain the same. The objectives of HSadapt, the proposed project, are to investigate the real-time control of these specialised HSs, which will allow for their dynamic and adaptive control for given reference objectives, even with changing environmental conditions. Furthermore, it will look at the specification and verification of multi-agent, large-scale systems, which will support the implementation of the theoretical results of the project on a large scale. Finally, the theoretical directions will be supported by some experimentation and prototyping, extended from the VISORSURF project

VisorSurf - A Hardware Platform for Software-driven Functional Metasurfaces (VISORSURF)
Funded by: H2020-FETOPEN-2016-2017 (Research and Innovation action)
Duration: 24 Months
Start Date: 1 April 2020
Description:
Metasurfaces, thin film planar, artificial structures, have recently enabled the realization of novel electromagnetic (EM) and optical components with engineered functionalities. These include total EM radiation absorption, filtering and steering of light and sound, as well as nano-antennas for sensors and implantable devices. Nonetheless, metasurfaces are presently non- adaptive and non-reusable, restricting their applicability to a single, static functionality per structure (e.g., steering light towards a fixed direction). Moreover, designing a metasurface remains a task for specialized researchers, limiting their accessibility from the broad engineering field. VISORSURF proposes a hardware platform-the HyperSurface-that can host metasurface functionalities described in software. The HyperSurface essentially merges existing metasurfaces with nanonetworks, acting as a reconfigurable metasurface whose properties can be changed via a software interface. This control is achieved by a network of miniaturized controllers, incorporated into the structure of the metasurface. The controllers receive programmatic directives and perform simple alterations on the metasurface structure, adjusting its EM behavior. The required end-functionality is described in well-defined, reusable software modules, adding the potential for hosting multiple functionalities concurrently and adaptively. VISORSURF will study in depth the novel and unexplored theoretical capabilities of the HyperSurface concept. Two experimental prototypes will be implemented: a switch-based fabric array as the control medium; and a Graphene based, making use of its exquisite properties to provide finer control. A real pilot-application will demonstrate the HyperSurface potential to adapt to changes in their environment, to interconnect to smart control loops and make use of Information Technology (IT) programming concepts and algorithms in crafting the EM behavior of materials.

DIRECTOR: Dynamically Reconfigurable mHealth Video Communications for Real-time Adaptation to Time-Varying Constraints
Funded by: University of Cyprus Senior Research Fellowships
Duration: September 2015 – September 2017
Description:
The objective of this project was to develop a unifying framework to support real-time adaptation of mobile Health (mealth) video communication systems to time-varying constraints imposed by video content and available bandwidth. The goal was to provide reliable, diagnostically-lossless clinical video quality, throughout the streaming session, that aids in the adoption of mHealth video systems in standard clinical practice. The proposed approach relied on new, multi-objective optimization methods that facilitated real-time dynamically reconfigurable encoding configurations, which jointly optimized medical video quality, associated bitrate demands, and encoding time requirements. The resulting framework is scalable and underlying technology independent, in the sense that the developed methods are applicable to different video content, compression technologies, wireless networks, and processing devices, provided that the appropriate system training is performed.
